Elizabeth Warren Says She'd Accept Biden's VP Nomination

On Rachel Maddow's show, Rachel Maddow asked Elizabeth Warren “If [Biden] asked you to be his runnng mate, would you say yes?”
Warren's one word answer: "Yes.”

Elizabeth is so much more ready for the job than someone like Stacy Abrams. I would not want Stacy Abrams as President if something happened to Biden after he was sworn in. There are three strong women Senators who ran against Biden. I think any one of them would be better than Biden, which means I would support any of the three over VP. Stacy Abrams, a former state legislator. It's not her time yet and I'd wouldn't feel safe. falling asleep at night knowing she was in control. Once she gets some sea legs, I might change my mind, but not this year.

Biden already has the Black vote. It's time for him to choose another segment of society: Not sure who that would be though..

Nailed 2018 races more accurately than anyone, and her theory is that we are in a period of extreme negative polarization, and enthusiasm/turnout  of the base is more important than chasing a small Nbr of swing voters.
To shore up the Dem coalition at the moment, the missing piece is younger/Millennial progressives. And of course POC cannot be ignored. A progressive POC makes most sense in this model for VP.That is not Amy, or Gretchen, and (importantly) wasn't Tim Kaine in 2016.

Abrams or Harris, but I suppose Harris has the inside track as she's been seen in a presidential primary.

IMO POC are more important than an olive branch to the Bernie left, but that's just me.

    My question (none / 0) (#29)
by Ga6thDem on Sat Apr 18, 2020 at 07:27:41 PM EST
is what is the base? 2018 was won in the suburbs. Was that "swing voters" or "base voters"?

I'm sure they are thinking about everything when it comes to the VP selection. I also have heard that Hispanic women are being considered. Abrams does nothing for the ticket that I can see. Harris would be a better pick just in my opinion due the fact that she's actually won statewide and held higher office.

That is the question, and it's where Bitecofer is in opposition to the Dem strategy of trying to sway the middle.
In 2018, it wasn't Republican swings, it was less-likely Dem voters c9ming out in droves that powered the Blue Wave.
That's largely younger Progressives and a more liberal, less centrist faction.

And even with that, Republican turnout as a % of reg voters was HIGHER than Dem. But there's a lot more Dems, if we can get them off the couch. Kaine didn't, and the theory is Amy won't either.

Progressive female POC is the theory.

VP is going to matter all that much. I've heard a lot of POC say they don't want a POC woman on the ticket to be used as GOTV mule.

In the end it is about getting rid of Trump and the election is a referendum on Trump. The most important thing I think is to have a VP who could take over the job from Biden considering his age.

Actually, quite good ... because it hits hard by showing and listing and hearing Trump's own words as well as clear documentary headlines.  On top of the direct strength of the ad, it puts Biden's message out there in significant swing states front & center and before Trump officially claims his own version of a China-argument.  The Biden ad doesn't blink at using the necessary cold-war type imagery of a Trump-China connection from the economy to CO-Vid.

On priorities - is the priority maximizing electoral turnout or is it setting up the future president?

If it's the latter, than IMO, Harris is a better choice than Warren if only due to her age.  If it's the former... I honestly don't know.  Warren could be a better choice but frankly the polling showed her supporters in the primary were some of the most loyal Dems, IOW, they're voting for Biden anyway.  I'm not sure there's a woman in the world who would actually help the ticket, for unfortunate reasons...  So in that case, might as well just go for it and pick the future president or just pick Bernie and be done with it (I don't really want that but it's also the only real "maximize turnout" pick).

I agree that Abrams isn't quite ready yet to be the next president.

running mate to capture their home state has the relevance it once had. Surely, JKF's selection of LBJ, and bringing Texas electoral college votes along was critical to his election; however, that calculus may no longer be as important.

It may still be a factor, but one outweighed, especially in more modern times, by complementary criteria. Certainly, Obama did not pick Biden to capture Delaware. And, the Christo-fascist Pence was chosen to be block runner for the un-churchy  Trump.

Senator Harris would not be necessary to gaining California's electoral votes, but she may have broad political attraction and help capture the national vote.  Similarly, Senator Warren is not necessary to the MA vote, but brings expertise necessary to the instant challenge of economic recovery. Senator Klobuchar, on the other hand, may help to solidify the MN vote, but her moderate positions match those of Biden rather than extending beyond them so as to address the range of Democratic voters.

All of the woman mentioned (Biden pledged to have a female running mate) are well-qualified and would be very  capable to serve as president in keeping with the Constitutional order of succession.

In my view, the election of a Democratic president will be a function of voter turn-out. Whomever is assessed as helping most in turn-out, should be our vice-presidential candidate.

Gretchen Whitmer, has been mentioned as Biden's running mate and those prospects appear to have sent some right wingers to the ledge and others to Courts and streets (in their vehicles) in protest of her April 9 executive order to extend and otherwise combat the corona virus outbreak.

Federal suits have been filed relating to unconstitutional taking and violation of the right to bear arms by closing gun shops.

Another step to bemire the governor was yesterday's massive traffic jam around Lansing, the state Capitol. The city is closed down other than for essential workers needing to get around.

A physician pleaded with one protestor to move his vehicle so as not to block the ambulance entrance to a hospital. The funding source for some of the protest activity is, apparently,  the DeVos family.

The protestors were decked out in their best MAGA attire, with some sporting the Confederate battle flag.  Perhaps, just displaying their history and heritage of Michigan as a former Confederate state. Oh, wait...never mind.  Just economic anxiety.

The directness belies years of precedent by prospective running mates, who often publicly play coy about the vice-presidential ambitions while simultaneously privately running campaigns to get themselves picked. In a series of interviews with CNN, aides, former bosses, and longtime friends say that straightforwardness reflects who Abrams has been for her entire adult life: A black woman raised in Mississippi and Georgia who feels if she is not upfront about her ambitions, she will get passed over.

It's just so refreshingly direct and honest I think it's very appealing.
