Facebook Hearing

Can anyone explain what it is that Facebook is accused of? Articles like this are ridiculous, not once does it say what they are "targeting children" with or how Instagram is dangerous. On some network later, Monica Lewinsky is going to weigh in, so I take it that bullying is involved.

Why isn't it a parent's responsibility to monitor their child's use of social media and the internet. Some Congressman today said on the radio that we are going to have a generation of afflicted children. Afflicted by what?

And what does artificial intelligencve have to do with it? I heard a news anchor on the radio say that a woman who has a miscarriage will be bombarded by it online for years.

I understand that the whistleblower has documents that show Facebook knew about some problem showing Instagram was harmful to children and purportedly "chose profit" over fixing the problem. Facebook says it has spent billions since 2016 addressing these problems. What exactly are the problems? The only thing I've ever seen on Instagram are celebritys posting photos of themselves or pushing products. Are the comments the problem? Why not just take away commenting?

Is this just a Facebook witchunt? (FYI, I visit FB about once every three months to see if the TL kid has posted new photos of my grandaughters. TalkLeft has a page there but it hasn't been updated in about 10 years.)

What am I missing other than some kids may use it as a bullying platform? Why not give people the right to delete comments by other that are critical of them?

Push users to more and more violent, outrageous content in order to keep users on Facebook, which increases ad revenue. This helps proliferate lots of misinformation, which can be manipulated intentionally by actors with malevolent intent (ie Russian agents, domestic and foreign terrorists). There is very little real content supervision, and the speed of misinformation proliferation can be enormous, and the impact of this can result in violent actions against ethnic, religious groups, etc.

Facebook is different from other internet web sites in its size and global reach.

Most print publishers are subject to legal claims against the misinformation they publish. Facebook & other internet giants are not...so there is little incentive to regulate their own content.

anti-social group we are here. I don't think it's our age, I think it's that most people who read and comment on TL have a pretty healthy desire to maintain their privacy and understand that social media opens your life up to the universe, warts and all (no matter how pretty the pictures).

Although I do think Facebook has a lot to do with the lack civility and general nastiness in the world today.

Full disclosure. I don't now have nor have ever had a Facebook account. Just has never interested me.

But, I said to my wife the other day, if Instagram is making you feel bad about yourself, turn it off. Problem solved. It's kind of like if cigarettes are causing you lung cancer, stop smoking them.

Yes, it can be a great tool for communication with others. But its platform is also subject to outside manipulation. I stopped using it in 2015. Haven't missed it at all. That said, I don't want to see it removed, for reasons you cited. But it's clear that a number of changes and reforms should be made to improve it and clean it up.

Just ran across that reading a review for an odd movie called Dogs Don't Wear Pants.

"Can anyone explain what it is that Facebook is accused of?"

enable people to make fools of themselves, in front of potentially millions of others, as opposed to only family and friends (and anyone else having the misfortune to be nearby.), like in the good old days?

full disclosure: I avoid all social media like the plague (no, not this plague, that plague.), because I really don't care all that much for people. so perhaps I'm not the best person to opine on the subject.

It seems like the 1/6 committee is about to get interesting.  Trump has told the toadies to refuse the subpoenas.

I just heard two options are "criminal contempt" and "inherent contempt".

Is there a simple explanation of the difference in the penalties?
