Happy New Year At Last (and open thread)

Happy New Year, everyone!

May the vaccines work, and may 2021 see the end of the rampage of COVID-19. Let us not let the lives of those we lost be in vain. Please heed science and not the word of elected politicians.

Take a moment to be proud that we, the voters, cast off the most undeserving, unprincipled, soul-less man to ever be given a desk in the oval office. Let him stew in Palm Beach, which will become like a prison to him, even if he's never arrested or charged with a crime.

Indeed, the pump don't work when the vandals steal the handles, but America just grabbed them back.

Here's to a Healthy, Safer, Trump-free world in 2021.

With much gratitude to our readers,

    Happy New Year TL!!! (5.00 / 2) (#1)

Woke up hopeful for all the reasons Jeralyn says.I know it is just an arbitrary date line in the sand but I'm going with it for a while.

Leaving the TV off today, need a break. Trump is back in DC for his final couple of weeks of fake relevance and acting out. He was not going to miss it, much as I hoped. Or maybe Palm Beach is really going to enforce that non-residency agreement.

I watched Bridgerton this week and completely enjoyed it. Perfect escape.

I also started watching The Madalorian, which really is as entertaining as a space western as everyone said. Reminds me of the shows we had when I was a kid except they didn't have anything as cute as Baby Yoda.

OK, I might turn on the TV to try to find some of the movies on the top 10 lists that I have not even heard of. Nomadland and First Cow seem like things I would like.

Anyway have a great day everyone. It's getting better.

I binge watched Madalorian after temporarily signing up for Disney+. I also enjoyed it. After watching it, I wished I had a small great grandchild so that I could buy them a baby Yoda toy. Of course, I would then be able to play with it as well.

    Happy New Year to everyone.

    I can rationalize anything!

Another good show - I discovered that the BBC did a series based on Vikram Seth's huge novel A Suitable Boy, now of my all time favorites. It's about two families, Hindu and Muslim, in 40's-50's India navigating the India-Pakistan partition, arranging marriages, rejecting arranged marriages, and life in general. The series is streaming on Acorn - I did not catch it ever broadcast on PBS, at least where I lived.  Mira Nair directed it and it is gorgeous, wonderful writing and acting. I have not finished it yet - seems like a perfect thing to dive back into today.

Might need to check into it.

I did manage to buy a talking alligator on my river boat trip down the Mississippi. He repeats everything he hears. He had my server at dinner almost rolling on the floor, she was laughing so hard. He also did a pretty mean sing along. He got a kangaroo buddy on my trip to Australia. He hops as well as talks.  They are not bad pandemic buddies.

with our oldest daughter, her husband, and our 22-month-old grandson. They live in NYC (we are just outside Phila), but they have been "podding" with us (following self-quarantines and negative test for all) since a week before Christmas. They will be here another two weeks, between semesters of college teaching for both of them. One of my wife's lo-bono clients celebrated their victory of winning his release from years of post-incarceration supervision by giving her (us) two fresh-frozen 4-pound lobsters, which we thawed and then boiled last night. They fed everyone elegantly, although getting to the meat is a lot of work; I hadn't realized how much harder the shell gets when the lobster is bigger. In the tradition of my parents, whose annual indulgence was shrimp cocktail and lobster (boiled live) on NYE with one couple of old friends. Today, my wife made hoppin' john, in the New Year's tradition of her Kentucky ancestors. Best to all -- especially good health -- for what has to be a better New Year.

All ten living secretaries of defense -- including Dick Cheney, James Mattis, Mark Esper, and Donald Rumsfield -- signed an open letter about the military and the peaceful transfer of power:

"As senior Defense Department leaders have noted, `there's no role for the U.S. military in determining the outcome of a U.S. election.' Efforts to involve the U.S. armed forces in resolving election disputes would take us into dangerous, unlawful and unconstitutional territory. Civilian and military officials who direct or carry out such measures would be accountable, including potentially facing criminal penalties, for the grave consequences of their actions on our republic."

David Frum: "That letter from 10 former SecDefs warning against Trump using the military to hold onto power causes me to wonder: Has Trump been making calls to US generals like that he made to Georgia secretary of state, demanding or threatening they help him overturn the 2020 election?"

the speaker's vote intrigue is being overshadowed by an all-out GOP civil war in the Senate. Three days after Mitch McConnell told his colleagues that the vote to certify the presidential election results on Jan. 6 would be "the most consequential I have ever cast," a dozen Republican senators have now publicly endorsed objecting to the Electoral College tallies that will make Joe Biden's victory official.

In short, there's a growing rebellion inside the GOP conference instigated by President Donald Trump, who promises more GOP senators will join the effort and also called for mass protests in D.C. on Wednesday. (Yes, the Proud Boys and right-wing militias will be there, and, yes, there is cause for concern about the prospect of violence.)

We can't say this emphatically enough: This does not happen to Mitch McConnell. For four years, the Senate leader has managed to maintain order in his ranks as Trump unleashes daily mayhem on the GOP from the White House. That's all gone to hell.

"I don't believe criminal justice reform is dead. It may be on life support, but it isn't dead," she said while speaking to a packed house at Georgetown Law on Wednesday afternoon.
    ...
Every dollar being spent to keep someone in prison for longer than they need to be, Yates said, is a dollar that could go to law enforcement and inmate reform programs to make communities safer.

"If we're as willing to invest in education as much as we are in building prisons, I can't help but believe that we would be in a much stronger position on the prevention side," she said.

I will look forward to Biden being bold enough to pick a young, liberal thinker rather than picking a safer moderate choice that will not ruffle the feathers of Republicans.

While repair and restoration is necessary, I would prefer it to be accompanied by bold action on criminal justice reform. I am not confident that Garland will move boldly on that front or on ensuring that all those who have broken the law will be held accountable regardless of their position, past or present.

On the appeals court, Garland has been a moderate liberal, with a definite pro-prosecution bent in criminal cases. Indeed, his views in the area of criminal law are considerably more conservative than those of the man he would replace, Justice Antonin Scalia.

A lot of this is oral flatulence but it's disturbing how honest and eager they are.  Trump has given them permission and congressional republicans are happy to help.

Will anyone be held accountable?  It's all on Trump.  Every bit of it.

Buried deep in a report claiming Donald Trump has no intention of walking away meekly after Congress certifies the 2020 presidential election on January 6th, the Daily Beast reports that "diehard' fans of the president are openly threatening violence the day they descend upon Washington D.C. for a "Stop the Steal" rally the president is promoting.

With the president suggesting to aides he may make a public address to the gathering-- meant to counter the election certification process on the Senate floor -- fans of the president are boasting they will bring a "literal war" to the streets of D.C.

According to the report, "the protesters' mood ahead of the Jan. 6 protest has turned even more desperate."

"Trump diehards from across the country have organized their travel to Washington on 'The Donald' forum," the Beast's report states. "One of the hottest topics on the site is how protesters can bring guns to D.C., which would count as a local crime in nearly all circumstances under Washington's strict gun laws. Others have talked about breaking into federal buildings or committing violence against law enforcement officers who try to stop them from storming Congress."

One comment that received approving nods stated, "I'm thinking it will be literal war on that day. Where we'll storm offices and physically remove and even kill all the D.C. traitors and reclaim the country."

for Gohmert would appear to be an "emergency" application to the Supreme Court. (A renewal of the appeal to the full Fifth Circuit "en banc" is also possible, I suppose, but after a summary, unanimous 3-judge panel denial, is not all that likely.) A Supreme Court application would fall within Justice Alito's jurisdiction, as he presently handles incidental and emergent matters out of the Fifth Circuit (which encompasses Texas). Alito would have two basic options, each with three sub-options. First: deal with it himself, or "refer it to the [full] Court." Either way, one of three things would then happen: grant some interim relief (highly improbable), deny it out of hand (improbable but less so), or not treat it as an emergency and let it sit until it becomes moot after Wednesday (most likely).

on the bird app are that Trump is being heavily pressured to resign. I guess there is no deal just quit. If I were Pence I wouldn't give him a pardon after all this. But then Pence isn't the sharpest tool in the shed either. Trump is resisting resigning hard. I guess he knows resigning brings immediate criminal indicts. My thought is the reason impeachment has been put off until Monday is the GOP is going to put a lot of pressure on him to resign but I don't think it will work. We're going to have articles pass like lightening through the house. Then what happens who knows. If Mitch sits on the articles in the senate more deaths and sedition is going to be on his head. Will Moscow Mitch pull the trigger?

by CaptHowdy on Sat Jan 09, 2021 at 06:32:04 AM EST
No matter how he leaves.  A resignation/pardon would be the only way to avoid them.  Or at least some of them.  But this stuff about criminal responsibility for the riot is the worst thing he's facing.  If he believes he is in danger, as the quote says, then possible anything could happen.

The House is not doing this until Monday because of some rule that they can't come back before Monday if one member objects.  Heard that from a house member on Lawerence.

As far as Mitch this was also discussed on Lawerence. They are also under some kind of unanimous consent thing so they literally can't return until the 19th if even one member objects.
    And we know they would.

So the possibility of this senate taking it up are virtually zero.  But by all reports the House is full steam ahead.  They are doing it.

Lawerence Tribe said it could be taken up by the next Schumer senate, legally, but why bother.  He will be gone and we have other problems more urgent than removing Trump who is already gone.

It's going to be a very interesting 11 days..

I know that it is because of a rule and it is a Republican that is using it make impeachment wait until Monday. That is why I wondered if the GOP was trying to talk him into resigning. Resigning certainly would be better for the GOP than having to actually record a vote for this.

I have always taken my car to the dealer for service with a do what needs to be done attitude, so am not really familiar with all the 'parts'.
Recently, I needed new tires and decided to get them replaced at Costco. When I dropped of the car, the mechanic asked if the wheel lock key was in the car. I had no idea what he was talking about and he explained and said it was usually kept where the spare tire is located. I said I would check. I went back told him I had found it and had very helpfully placed it on the driver's seat.

Later in the day, when I went to pick up my car, the mechanic looked at me and I could tell he was trying hard not to laugh...apparently, I don't know the difference between a tire iron and a wheel lock key!

I've had this car for 10 years at least.  I guess I never had a fiat.  It was a nightmare.  I realized I had a flat and pulled off.   I spent about an hour trying to figure it out in freezing cold with no gloves.  Gave up and drove it home on the flat.  Good bye tire.  But when I got it on the carport with gloves and knee pads I still couldn't get it off.  I call my local go to and asked the said I had his sympathy, tried to explain how to do it and said he can't come personally till Monday.

So I did what you always do when something make no sense I went to YouTube.

I know you live in a rural area so not sure if this would be any help (in terms of getting to you in a reasonable amount of time) but most car insurance companies have road side assistance that you can add to your policy for about $10-15 a year.

I got a flat twice on my previous car. Geico had someone out in half and hour to change the tire. The next time was on the NJ turnpike where only turnpike authorized vehicles were allowed, so I called Geico and they contacted whoever. Only had to wait 45 mins.

late 1970s/early 1980s, I was driving over a mountain pass in the winter. It was snowing hard and accumulating, and chains were required. I pulled over into a chain-up area to put on my chains. That was NOT an easy task on a Vega that had a 3" clearance. You can't get your head under the car to see anything. Had to do a lot of feeling around under the frame and behind the wheels. While lying in the snow. And, since I was alone, I had to hop into the car and back up onto the chains just right, so I could connect the links. In and out, back and forth. For each side of the car. Once on the other side of the pass, when the roadway was not so treacherous, I pulled into a chain-up area to remove the chains. In the process of doing that--you know, unclipping the link/lock, hopping in, moving forward just so, then back; somehow I got the chain set on the left wheel wrapped around the axle. Oh shit. I spent the next 30 minutes or so trying to get that figured out, but only made it worse. I was the only one in the turn-out, and there was no traffic passing by. I got so frustrated and damned cold from lying on the icy snow; my hands turned bright red. Gloves go only so far, and mittens won't work in this situation. A man driving a State snow plow/sanding truck saw me and pulled into the turn-out. Rolled down his window. "Looks like you're having some trouble." "Yes!" I yelled, "I got the chains wrapped around the axle!" He looked at me and paused a few seconds. "You ain't no wimmin's libber are ya?" He was serious. So in the most girlish voice and attitude I could muster I blurted out, "Oh, no, of course not! Not me!" "Well, that's a good thing. I don't help no wimmin's libbers." He got out of his monstrous rig, walked over to my car, laid down onto the compact snow. He reached under the car, feeling around for the right parts, had me do some forwarding and backing up. He eventually got the damned thing off. I thanked him profusely, in the most girlish voice and attitude I could muster, although I really was grateful for his help. He looked proud.

Real women are not too proud to manipulate foolish men to get what they need.
