Trump Signs COVID-19 Relief Bill, House to Vote on $2k payments

It's time for Congress to "Give Us Something to Believe In". $600.00 is not enough. $2,000.00 will help so many people.

Now that Trump signed the COVID-Relief bill, the House will vote on whether to give each of us $2,000.00 instead of $600.00 per month. Sen. Schumer today said the bill has enough support to pass the House, but the Senate, which balked before, is uncertain.

The House is in recess right now but is expected to resume later today (5-6 pm ET) to take up the increased stimulus payment and then the overide of the veto of the Defense Authorization Act.     Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said that a proposal from Democrats to approve $2,000 stimulus checks "no realistic path to quickly pass the Senate," the Washington Post reports.

    McConnell said Republicans would not be "bullied" into passing the bill quickly despite intensifying pressure from Democrats and President Trump.

    "Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) will filibuster an override of President Trump's defense bill veto unless the Senate holds a vote on providing $2,000 direct payments to Americans," Politico reports.

    "McConnell and the Senate want to expedite the override vote and I understand that. But I'm not going to allow that to happen unless there is a vote, no matter how long that takes, on the $2,000 direct payment,"

    I was more interested in his odd suggestion the NDAA would somehow, I don't know, I guess promote 5G.

    Might itself promote a rethinking of what he is "briefed" on in the next three weeks.  One can hope.

    Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer will try to pass the House bill by unanimous consent Tuesday but Republicans are expected to object. Many GOP senators have previously resisted higher stimulus checks.

    Unless there's cooperation from all 100 senators, it would take several days to set up a roll call vote on the proposal and it would need to garner 60 votes. That's a steep path toward approval -- and it's all occurring during what should be a holiday break for Congress.

    But even if Democrats cannot secure higher payments for the public, Trump has handed them an opportunity to seize a politically popular stance and divide the GOP in the process. Just 44 House Republicans voted for the larger checks, with 130 opposed.

    there will not be a vote on a stand alone increase. Any bill that McConnell allows on the floor for a vote will be loaded with enough poison pills that it will not garner Dem votes.

    Unless Republicans have a death wish, and it is also the right thing to do, they must approve the $2000 payments ASAP. $600 IS NOT ENOUGH! Also, get rid of Section 230 - Don't let Big Tech steal our Country, and don't let the Democrats steal the Presidential Election. Get tough!

    Europeans are extending paychecks to people who have lost their jobs, we are sending checks to every registered taxpayer who makes under roughly a third of a million dollars.

    In Europe its OK for people with jobs to help people without them, in the US you cannot give out money to only the people that need it, that's fricken socialism or communism or anarchy or atheism or some other term Fox News throws around to scare conservatives into thinking helping people who need it is un-American.  But.. but... helping the economy is about as American as you can get.  Gots to keep that money flowing upwards, can't have the Trumps of the world not making money because of a global pandemic.

    Your analysis is spot on.

    Yes, I'm a life long Missourian...born and raised. A city girl living in St. Louis County. I love our hills and always am glad to see them after traveling through the flat lands of Illinois and other states that are flat and boring. Eagle Rock is in a beautiful area of the state.

    I have to admit that I get increasingly ashamed of the actions and often the mindset of the state and often our country.  It seems that as a group it has lost about 100 points off the IQ scale and have let the worse of us take over. I don't like the direction our country is moving in. Over the last 4 years, I've often wished I could become an expat (move to a saner country) but my age and lack of sufficient wealth prevents that from being a real possibility.
