DEA Threatens MA Medical Marijuana Doctors

Massachusetts enacted a medical marijuana law in 2012. Recently, shortly after the first licenses were approved, the DEA began visiting MA physicians associated with medical marijuana dispensaries and giving them a choice: Give up your DEA license to prescribe most medications, or give up your association with dispensaries.

The stark choice is necessary, the doctors said they were told, because of friction between federal law, which bans any use of marijuana, and state law, which voters changed in 2012 to allow medical use of the drug.

The DEA’s action has left some doctors, whose livelihoods depend on being able to offer patients pain medications and other drugs, with little option but to resign from the marijuana companies, where some held prominent positions.

The DEA gets progressively more out of step with the Department of Justice, Congress and state legislatures every day. Its budget is bloated and it desperately needs new leadership. DEA Director Michelle Leonhart, who presumably approves tactics such as these, should be asked to resign and a more enlightened director should be appointed to take her place. You can sign a Change.Org petition to remove her here.

do away with the DEA in its entirety. there was never any legitimate reason for its creation, it wastes millions in tax dollars, for a negative ROI. in the 40 years of its existence, it's never come anywhere close to "winning" the war on (some people, using some) drugs.

short of that, get someone in there with more than two simple functioning synapses to run the place. ms. leonhart has proven, from day one, she is incapable of seeing beyond the end of her nose. give her a job she'll be good at, arranging the office supplies somewhere.

is worth a read on wikileaks

Created by Nixon in 73 and fully supported by congress the DEA reassigned people from from several enforcement agencies and consolidated them under the DOJ. Full read of the wiki piece is worth it including the section of on going disputes to the content linked at the top of the article.

DEA budget is about the same as the value of materials seized, ie we could buy everything seized at street prices for the same cost as running the agency. Imagine the money saved if we just bought drugs in the source countries.

who is - no was - a legal grower of medical pot and had been for years. He is completely legal in California. Last year the DEA raided his gardens and then destroyed them. Interrogated him and intimidated him and humiliated him in the close knit community. Turns out they didn't care at all about his rather small legal gardens, but the DEA was working with ICE to get info on a group that my friend had not been associated with for years and years and had no knowledge of!

I really do think that it is the DEA that controls doctors' prescribing of controlled substances.  Even "medical marijuana" would presumably be a controlled substance on the level of valium or ambien, moving from catagory I to category IV or V, I assume.  If you don't want marijuana to be a controlled substance, then change federal law.

This is the person leading/heading the DEA.

    DEA targeting MDs in MA (5.00 / 2) (#16)
by Lfrieling on Sat Jun 07, 2014 at 08:38:10 AM EST
I believe this happened in California about 4 years ago.  The courts (state I think) told the DEA to cut it out.  It might have been the interference with the doctor-patient relationship although my memory is saying "first amendment infringement."  What's important is that the defeat to the DEA in California did not sufficiently deter this obsolete and dangerous government agency from trying to ruin lives elsewhere.  In the words of Mel Gibson, "Gentlemen, we have to protect our phony baloney jobs."  The DEA and the Feds I believe are continuing to ruin lives randomly to keep people scared, to assert their power in an ongoing way, and to basically do THE SAME THINGS THAT TERRORISTS DO!  Instead of Muslims or non-Muslims or other groups, they target pot-smokers and the pioneers in the legal pot world.  If drugs are legal, we are left with no need for a DEA, and people who had and may still have a health problem.  Adding the legal problem to the health problem does ONLY damage to our friends, relatives, fellow citizens, and to the REST OF THE WORLD.  Don't even get me started on lumping industrial hemp fiber into the pot pile, forcing us to buy hemp from China, Canada, and everywhere but growing it here.  We're AMERICANS and can do anything we set our minds to.   Lenny
