Dems Seek to Raise Army Size

The Hill reports that House and Senate Democrats today will be introducing the Army Relief Act to increase the size of the Army:

Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.), ranking member of the Senate Armed Services (SASC) airland subcommittee, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), a SASC member, and Reps. Ellen Tauscher (D-Calif.) and Mark Udall (D-Colo.), both members of the House Armed Services committee, are pressing for the passage of the United States Army Relief Act. The legislation seeks to raise the cap of the Army’s end strength, said an aide to Tauscher.

If the army is authorized to recruit more soldiers, where will they come from in no one volunteers? Will it pave the way for a draft?

I guess this post means that the "Get Rove" talking points aren't working as well as expected - it's back to fear mongering about the non-existant Draft. Has TL noticed that the only ones who ever talk about a draft are left wing bloggers? And desperate Democratic Congressmen.

Actually, they're only doing what one conservative think tank asked Congress to do at the beginning of the year.

They want the army out of Iraq, but they want a bigger one. Hmmm, what they want to do is try and force the Repubs to bring up the draft. Not a bad shot. Let's see if the Repubs bite.

No they will not start the draft since the resulting protests would put a crimp in all future war plans they may have. And when I say "they" I am including creeps like Lieberman and Clinton who are all too willing to go along with the PNAC agenda. They will get the extra bodies from the Land of CAFTA, where there is a bottomless pit of cannon fodder that will be tempted by the prospect of getting a green card for themselves (if they survive) and their families. This has actually been going on for some time now.

They want the army out of Iraq,
Only a minority of Dems want the army out. Some back the mission which is in essence an implementation of the "Carter Doctrine", albeit poorly done

“which is in essence an implementation of the "Carter Doctrine"” Your telling us you think the invasion of Iraq was essentially a move to protect US interests against Soviet aggression in the Middle East? Ridiculous. The invasion of Iraq was a step toward what Wolfowitz and company see as the solution to terrorism; democratizing the Middle East. The Wolfowitz doctrine, now often referred to as the Bush doctrine, but certainly not the Carter doctrine. “Will it pave the way for a draft?” I think TL has pegged the motivation for raising a cap that is nowhere near being reached, stir up more rumors of an impending draft.

no the Carter Doctrine i am refering to is sending in troops to protect the flow of oil. He was the first to support this idea, at least publically. This had nothing to do with democracy, it had to do with maintaining a presence in the ME especially after SA pressured us to get our troops out. Our policy in the ME has centered about the question of oil since at least 1953.

PPJ: I am not certain I recall seeing Lieberman or Clinton calling for the troops to come home from Iraq. Could you provide a link that supports the accusation?

JL - It was a generic Demo. Sorry if that offends you, but I know of only one Repub congressman who has mentioned the subject - from NC ?? - and he is running from it. So it was the Demos plus 1 Repub except for Hillary who is trying to positon herself from the Left to center and Joe L.
